We protect the environment by sorting and recycling as much material as possible, and this includes TV recycling in and around Austin. Why not throw away an old TV? The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality encourages all Texans to support the state’s economy and environment by repairing, reselling, donating, or recycling used electronics, and this includes TV recycling in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. Choosing to recycle used electronics over landfill disposal reduces the need to process raw materials for new products. As well, throwing a TV in a landfill can be dangerous as it contains many toxic materials. According to an NBC News article related to throwing your older TV in the landfill versus TV recycling, picture tubes contain pounds of toxic lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and the cabinets and circuit boards contain brominated flame-retardants. How are TVs recycled? TVs contain a number of valuable materials that can be broken down and reused. The steel, aluminum and copper metal found in the wires, cables and circuitry are used in new products. The glass from television and computer screens is melted down, separating the lead, and reused in the manufacture of new products. Don’t put your TV in the landfill! At Waste Kings Junk Removal, we will pick your old electronics and recycle them. TV recycling in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston makes good environmental sense. |
The stats
Electronics recycling in the U.S. is now a $20.6 billion industry, up from less than $1 billion in 2002, according to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. Employees in the U.S. electronics recycling industry multiplied from 6,000 in 2002 to 45,000 in 2011. Several factors have contributed to the industry’s rapid revolution: significant growth in the consumption of electronics, awareness brought on by state law and recycling programs, and investment in equipment and technology.
Bill 329 – The Television Take Back Law
In 2007, the Texas Legislature passed a law that required computer manufacturers to take back and recycle or reuse old computers. In 2011, the state added television manufacturers to the law, and the first recycling report is due to the state next year. Under this program, consumers can recycle their products for free. Manufacturers are required to report how much materials they collect to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality each year. More than 24 million pounds of computer equipment was collected in 2012 — the most in a single year since the program began, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality report to the Legislature. About 20 million pounds were recycled and more than 3 million were reused. It’s important to note that the report only represents recycling from manufacturers who are required to report to the program.
Environmentalists, local government leaders, and recycling businesses in favor of the new law say it will keep toxic materials, such as lead and mercury, out of landfills and water sources. Contributing to TV recycling in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston helps keep toxins out of your life.
